FAQ

Common questions

What actually moves the XAU/USD price?

Gold responds mainly to real interest rates, the US dollar, inflation expectations and demand for defensive assets. Because it pays no yield, higher rates tend to weigh on it. The size and timing of each reaction varies, so treat any explanation as context rather than a forecast you can trade mechanically.

Is one pip in gold really 0.01?

Yes, for XAU/USD one pip is 0.01 of a US dollar. With 1 standard lot equal to 100 oz, a one-pip move is therefore a fixed dollar amount per lot. The pip value calculator converts that into your account currency so you can compare it with the spread and your risk per trade.

Why does the gold price I see here differ from my broker's quote?

The price on this site is a reference feed, while your broker quotes its own bid and ask from its liquidity providers. Small differences come from timing, the spread and the data source. Use your platform's quote for order decisions and this page for orientation only.

Does gold trade the same hours as Australian shares?

No. XAU/USD trades nearly around the clock on weekdays, while the ASX keeps a short local session. That means most of the gold action happens while Australia is asleep, so plan entries and stops with the trading hours page open in A$ terms and your own time zone.

How much leverage should I use on gold?

There is no correct number; it depends on your stop distance, account size and how much of your equity you accept losing on one trade. Up to 1:200 is available, but it is a cap, not a target. Use the margin and position size calculators to see the exposure before you commit.
